..and so this journey begins – again!…

Well, here we are again. Following the success of the SBOB conversion, we decided to go for something a little more ambitious. We had long considered another van conversion and to further our knowledge, we went to the ‘Self-Built’ campervan festival known as Camp Quirky. In late April 2023 we hired a VW Transporter Camper (Calefornia in fact) and set off. The van was superb. Automatic gear box and handled like a dream. Unfortuately it quickly became apparent that it was too small for our needs.

Camp Quirky was a great success for us. There were several really useful workshops, talks and discussions on the subject of van conversions and van life in general. As to the make and model of van, the clear favorites included a Ford Transit, VW Crafter and Mercedes Sprinter – the medium wheel base varient being favoured as a compromise of size versus handling. In fact, the MWB has the better load margin of the size range.

We set a budget and started our search. By coincidence our son hired a MWB Mercedes Sprinter and let us have a quick go down our road (we live in the middle of nowhere down a farm access road). We were both hooked straightaway really, which came as a relief as our search criteria was far too large at that point. Anyway, we settled on a 2017 MWB Mercedes Sprinter and this is the account of our build.

I guess the following pages will be testament as to whether we’re successful or not!

BTW, “Moose” – because it’s a Moocesdes!!!
